The program

Our highly effective coaching program for couples in the aftermath of infidelity looking to heal and regain trust.

Walking into your first couples therapy session can feel nerve-wracking, especially when you’re not sure what to expect. Maybe you’re wondering whether you’ll both be seen together, what kinds of questions you’ll be asked, or how the therapist will approach your unique situation. These concerns are completely normal—most couples feel a mix of hope and anxiety before that first appointment.

As someone who provides Couples Therapy & Marriage Counseling in Miami, I often hear these same questions from couples who are taking that brave first step toward healing their relationship. Many are also curious about “What’s the success rate of Couples Counseling?” and want to understand how that initial session sets the foundation for the work ahead.

The good news is that the first sessions are designed to be collaborative and informative rather than intimidating. Understanding what happens during that first hour can help you feel more prepared and confident as you begin this important journey together.

This guide will walk you through exactly what to expect in your first couples counseling session at Relationship Experts, helping you approach it with clarity and confidence.

Will We Both be Seen Together or Separately in the First Session?

One of the most common questions we hear from couples is whether they’ll be seen together or individually during their first session. Here’s how we approach this important decision:

Couples Therapy Together: Our Preferred Approach

We strive to see both partners together for the first session and for the majority of the therapy process. There’s something powerful about having both perspectives in the room simultaneously, allowing us to observe your natural dynamics and hear how you both experience your relationship challenges.

When you’re both present, we can witness firsthand how you communicate, where misunderstandings arise, and what patterns might be contributing to your struggles. This real-time observation provides invaluable insights that individual sessions simply can’t offer.

When Marriage Counseling Individual Sessions Might Happen

We may ask to see you separately at some point, depending on the needs of the couple and the situation. However, this typically occurs later in the therapeutic process, not during that crucial first meeting. Individual sessions might be helpful when we need to address personal trauma, explore individual perspectives on sensitive topics, or work through specific concerns that require individual processing.

Starting Couples Counseling Separately: Rare Exceptions

In some cases, and very rarely, we begin by seeing partners separately. This is typically due to client requests or specific situations that require individual space. For example, if one partner has safety concerns or if there are circumstances that make a joint first session inappropriate, we’ll adapt our approach to meet your needs.

Why Our Couples Therapists Believe in Relational Solutions

Generally, we believe relational problems are best addressed with relational solutions, which are easier to achieve when both partners are present in the therapy room. Relationships are created by two people, and healing them most effectively happens when both people are actively engaged in the process together.

What is the First Session of Couples Counseling Like?

Your first session is carefully structured to help me understand your story while making you both feel comfortable and heard. Here’s what you can expect:

Information Gathering is the Primary Goal

The first session is to gather as much information about who you are as a couple and as individuals, your relational struggles, and your goals for the therapy process. Think of it as laying the foundation for everything that comes next.

I’m not trying to solve all your problems in that first hour. Instead, I’m listening, learning, and beginning to understand the unique dynamics that make up your relationship.

Learning About You as Individuals and as a Couple

We usually begin with learning about you as a couple and individuals outside of your relationship issue, including exploring your family of origin, your relationships with them, and with your in-laws. This might seem unrelated to your current struggles, but understanding your backgrounds helps me see patterns and influences that shape how you approach relationships.

I want to know who you are when you’re not in conflict. What drew you together? What are your individual strengths? How do your histories influence the way you connect with each other?

Exploring Your Relationship Story

Then, we explore the relationship story and the issues that brought you to us. I’ll ask about your journey as a couple, how you met, what your early relationship was like, and when you first noticed challenges emerging.

This isn’t about assigning blame or determining who’s “right.” It’s about understanding the narrative of your relationship and identifying the specific concerns that led you to seek help.

Goal Setting and Treatment Planning Begins

We then explore some of your thoughts as far as goals for our work together. This is just the beginning of the treatment planning. What does success look like for each of you? What changes do you hope to see in your relationship?

Sometimes couples have very different goals, and that’s perfectly normal. Part of my job is helping you find common ground and shared objectives for your work together.

Therapist Observations and Recommendations

Towards the end of the first session, we provide observations of patterns and other things we notice and make recommendations regarding the treatment plan. I’ll share some initial thoughts about what I’m observing and explain our structured process to get to your goals.

This isn’t a diagnosis or judgment—it’s the beginning of a collaborative conversation about how we can best support your relationship.

Assignment for Between Sessions

And lastly, we assign a couple’s assessment that you will do in between the first and second session. This homework gives us valuable additional information to guide our work together.

Will you give us homework or assignments after the first session?

Yes, after the first session, we assign The Relationship Checkup assessment by the Gottman Institute. This evidence-based tool provides us with detailed insights into various aspects of your relationship.

We’ll send a link for both partners to answer questions about your relationship. The assessment covers areas like communication, intimacy, conflict resolution, and shared goals. It typically takes about 30-45 minutes to complete, and you’ll do it separately from your partner.

Once completed, your therapist receives a detailed analysis, which we’ll review in the next session to guide our work together. This analysis helps us understand your relationship’s specific strengths and growth areas, allowing us to tailor our approach to your unique needs.

The assessment isn’t a test you can pass or fail—it’s simply another tool to help us understand your relationship more completely and develop the most effective treatment plan for your specific situation.

What questions does a couples therapist ask?

During your first session, our couples therapists ask a variety of questions designed to help us understand your story. Here are some examples of what you might expect:

Background questions might include: “Tell us about your family of origin,” “How did your parents’ relationship influence your views on marriage?” or “What was your longest relationship before this one?”

Relationship-specific questions could be: “How did you two meet?” “What was it like when you first fell in love?” “When did you first notice problems in your relationship?” or “What does a typical disagreement look like between you two?”

Goal-oriented questions might sound like: “What do you hope to achieve in therapy?” “If we’re successful, what will be different about your relationship?” or “What specific changes would make the biggest difference for you?”

Remember, there are no wrong answers to these questions. We’re simply trying to understand your unique story and what brought you to this point.
