Hi there, I'm Idit Sharoni, LMFT

If you and your partner have already tried couples therapy and walked away discouraged, you’re not alone. Many couples who reach out to our team have done this once or twice before. Sitting through weeks or months of weekly sessions. Telling the same stories. They cried, talked about communication. They left each session feeling a little better, then went home and had the same fight three days later.

The relationship didn’t really change. The money was spent. The hope quietly faded.

So when someone suggests trying couples therapy again, your gut response makes complete sense. Why would it be different this time? You have every reason to be skeptical. We’re going to take that question seriously, because the answer matters more than most therapy websites are willing to say.

Key Takeaways:

Why Couples Therapy Didn’t Work – and What Could Be Different This Time

  • Couples therapy didn’t work the first time because most sessions follow an open-ended talk-therapy format instead of a targeted method. Without a clear roadmap, couples often end up replaying the same arguments in a nicer room.
  • Should you try couples therapy again? Yes – if the approach actually changes. A second attempt only helps when it trades weekly venting for a structured, goal-driven process with a real endpoint.
  • Specialty couples therapy treats the relationship itself as the client, not one partner. Therapists trained specifically in couples work track the pattern between you both instead of deciding who’s “the problem.”
  • Out of network couples therapy often means working with a true specialist instead of a generalist. Couples who felt stuck in past therapy commonly see real movement once they work with a therapist who does this work exclusively.

Why didn’t our last couples therapy actually change anything?

Most likely, the structure of the work didn’t match the kind of help your relationship needed. Many couples therapists use a model clinicians sometimes call “talk therapy,” or open ended weekly sessions, where you come in, talk about the week, work through the latest fight, and go home. That format has its place. For couples in real distress, it often becomes another setting for the same arguments you’re already having at the kitchen table.

This is something Idit has written about directly. When therapy lacks structure, it can easily turn into a place where couples vent about each other in front of a third person, get a few communication tips, and never actually move the underlying pattern. We have a longer post on why venting sessions don’t work and the benefits of structured couples therapy if you want to read more about that distinction.

What Are The Real Reasons Couples Therapy Didn’t Work?

There are a few specific reasons couples therapy often doesn’t move things:

  • Generalist therapists with limited couples training. Many therapists are licensed to see couples but haven’t built a career around this specific work. Couples therapy is genuinely harder than individual therapy. It takes years of specialty training and direct experience to do it well, and many couples have unknowingly been working with a generalist when they actually needed a specialist.
  • No clear method or roadmap. Without a structured approach, sessions tend to drift. You might leave a session feeling heard, but you don’t have a sense of what should happen next. There’s no map. There’s no end point. After six months, you’re still talking, but you don’t know where you’re going.
  • A therapist who took a side. This one comes up often. Couples sometimes leave previous therapy because one partner felt the therapist favored the other partner, or because the therapist was unintentionally giving the message that one of you was “the problem.” We have more thoughts on what makes therapy actually work in Idit’s piece on how to make your couples counseling a success, which addresses both of these issues directly.
  • The same arguments, just in a nicer room. If most of your sessions ended up replaying the conflicts you were already having at home, your therapist may not have had the tools to interrupt the pattern and help you build something different.

If any of this matches your experience, that’s not a sign your relationship is beyond help. It’s a sign you needed a different kind of help than you were getting.

Why don’t our team’s therapists take sides?

Skilled couples work doesn’t take sides. Our role is to help the relationship, which means holding both partners with equal care and attention. Neither of you is the patient. Neither of you is the problem. The pattern between you is what gets the focused attention.

Why Does It Feel Like Your Last Therapist Took a Side?

This matters because so many couples leave previous therapy feeling that their therapist quietly favored one partner. Sometimes the therapist was sympathetic to the hurt partner and gave subtle messages to the other partner that they should have done more. Sometimes the therapist felt sorry for the partner whose perspective they understood better and the other partner felt unseen. Either way, the couple often leaves with one partner feeling validated and the other feeling judged. That isn’t couples work. That’s individual therapy with one partner watching.

How Does Specialty Couples Therapy Treat the Relationship as the Client?

Our team is trained to track the dynamic between you, not to pick a side in the conflict. If something one of you is doing is keeping the pattern stuck, we’ll name it kindly. If something the other is doing is keeping the pattern stuck, we’ll name that kindly too. Both of you are responsible for the relationship. Both of you have the power to change it. Our job is to help you both see the pattern clearly enough that you can do something different together.

What makes specialty couples therapy different from what we tried before?

Specialty couples therapy is structured, goal oriented, and built specifically for relational work. It treats the relationship as the focus of treatment, not one partner’s individual symptoms. It uses a clear method instead of letting sessions drift week to week. And it comes from clinicians who have spent years working specifically with couples, not therapists who see couples occasionally between individual clients.

What Does Specialty Couples Therapy Actually Look Like in Session?

A smiling couple sits close together on a couch, making eye contact and talking openly during a guided session. An example of what makes specialty couples therapy different from what they'd tried before. Out of network couples therapy in Miami Beach, Tampa, and Orlando for couples asking, "should we try couples therapy again?" Book your session today.

A few things that change when the structure is right:

You walk into each session with a sense of where the work is going. There’s a beginning, a middle, and an end to the process. You’re not signing up for an open ended commitment with no clear direction.

The therapist isn’t just listening and reflecting. They’re actively guiding the work, naming patterns, interrupting cycles when they start, and helping you both build new skills you can use in real life. The work goes somewhere on purpose.

The relationship is the client. Both partners are equally engaged. Both are equally responsible for the work. That changes the whole feel of being in the room. The pattern between you is what gets the focused attention.

The therapist has done this thousands of times before. They’ve seen variations of your situation across many couples. They aren’t figuring out couples work as they go.

You can read more about our approach to couples counseling if you want to see how this looks in practice.

How will we know the new couples therapist is actually different?

You’ll know within the first few sessions. You won’t be answering the same intake questions a third time and then getting another open ended weekly session schedule. You’ll start the work with a clear assessment of what’s actually happening in your relationship, what the patterns underneath your fights are, and what the work ahead looks like.

A Few Things That Distinguish Our Team Specifically:

When you start with us, you work with one therapist. That relationship matters. But your therapist isn’t working alone. Our small team meets every week to consult on cases together. Every member of our team is a specialist in couples work. Every member is experienced. All our therapists are experts. So while one therapist holds your case, an entire team of specialists is behind that work.

Every couples therapist on our team has more than a decade of experience working specifically with couples. We’re all trained in the Gottman Method. None of us are life coaches. None of us are generalists. This is the work we’ve chosen to spend our careers doing.

The work is structured. We don’t do open ended weekly sessions where you come in and talk about the week. There’s a clear assessment, a clear method, and a clear sense of progress. You’ll know what we’re working on, why, and what comes next.

We’d be glad to talk about whether your relationship is one of them.

FAQ

Still Wondering Why This Time Would Be Different?

  • Why would this time be different? Specialty couples therapy is structured, treats the relationship as the client, and comes from therapists who don’t take sides.
  • Should we try couples therapy again if it didn’t work before? Yes – a second attempt works when the approach itself changes, not just the therapist.
  • What makes specialty couples therapy different from what we tried? It replaces open-ended weekly talk with a clear assessment, a defined method, and Gottman-trained clinicians who do this work exclusively.
  • Will insurance cover this, or is it out-of-network couples therapy? Most couples pay out of pocket and use out-of-network benefits for partial reimbursement.
  • What if only one of us believes therapy will help this time? That’s common, and it doesn’t have to be resolved before you start.
